Everyone in racing rightly regards the Injured Jockeys’ Fund with a mix of pride, affection and awed admiration.

It is our shining light, an inspirational institution rooted in practical compassion. Inevitably it comes to the forefront of our thoughts in the wake of hideous events, be it a JT McNamara or Freddy Tylicki.

But the majority of its work is not the stuff of headlines. It is about looking after hundreds of dependent individuals on a day-to-day basis – making sure a gas bill has been paid, a leak in the roof sorted, giving mental support in times of particular trouble and a raft of other supporting services.
