Sixty years ago, as thoughts turned to the 179th running of the Derby, the complexion of British and Irish racing presented a very different picture to today.

As we see when we look back at the racing year of 1958, featuring the Mickey Rogers-trained Derby winner Hard Ridden, it appears the racing world has been turned on its head.

The past ten years have brought seven Irish-trained winners of the Derby, as well as a French-trained winner for the Coolmore partners who have overtaken the aristocrats of the past in the race's roll of honour.
