Hooray for no fifth day - but Cheltenham's four days can still be a lot better
Is there any chance the whole five-day festival furore was just a majestic marketing ploy by the Jockey Club? Any chance at all? If not, it has certainly turned into a pretty shrewd piece of 'accidental' advertising.
Only a gormless 'eejit' would have been oblivious to the fact that hardly anybody actually wanted an extra day. I was that gormless 'eejit' back in January 2020, suggesting we should not be too hasty to rubbish a five-day festival.
My proposed Saturday card consisted of the Fred Winter, the novice handicap chase, the cross-country, the Ryanair, the mares' novice hurdle and the Kim Muir. James Knight, director of racing trading at Entain, was prompt to tweet: "There's only one word for this – rubbish."
