The show is nearly over. On Tuesday Channel 4 will broadcast racing for the final time before the action switches to ITV.

For some people the transfer of rights is simply a matter of learning to press a new set of buttons to access the coverage. As long as the camera is pointing at the horses when the race is taking place they will be quite happy. For others, though, it is either a welcome opportunity for a fresh new approach or a reason to be sad because something familiar and cherished is ending.

If you are under the age of 50 it’s hard to recall life without Channel 4 Racing, although an analysis of its overall performance in the 32 years it was on air needs to be split into the first 28 years and then the last four.
