By the time you read this – always presuming anyone reads this – she'll probably be there, over the threshold, her dalliance with the nervous nineties concluded, the 100 up.

If Josephine Gordon rode the winner she needed to reach a century for the year at Kempton on Wednesday evening, let celebrations commence. If she didn't, well, she will before long, and it will be a remarkable achievement.

Only once before has a woman ridden 100 winners in a calendar year in Britain – Hayley Turner did so in 2008 – but Gordon has done it faster, with a better strike-rate, earning more prize-money. When winner 101 inevitably crosses the line this side of Hogmanay, last year's champion apprentice will be out on her own.
