In a supremely high-class sign-off to ITV's Saturday Ascot coverage, one indeed of which the mighty Desmond Lynam would have been proud, Ed Chamberlin closed with the words: "King George day belonged to one horse - she was ready, willing, Enable."

Very able, in fact.

There is always a danger that comes with the powerful influence of immediacy. In the heat of the moment, enthused by a stunning display in the way a sports fan should be, we can get a tad carried away by a performance, immersing ourselves in the here and now and failing to contextualise what we just witnessed against what has gone before.
