Enable triumph a reminder of Gosden's ability to take the guess out of his work

It can be a funny old game. On occasions, a trainer tells you his horse will improve for the run after a long break. Come the day and it doesn’t.

Another trainer will insist his horse will be better for stepping up in trip. It regresses. Another will maintain his front-running two-year-old will be better with a lead. It isn’t. Others still will opine that their soft-ground winner needs fast ground to thrive. It founders. And so on, and on.

Despite what you might read on social media, this isn’t to say trainers don’t know what they are doing. It’s more an expression of what they would like to see happen, because if racing is one thing, it’s a game of hope and dreams.
