As the Cheltenham Festival approaches I write to express my disappointment that the name of Ireland’s greatest racing legend will no longer feature in the title of the County Hurdle.

Vincent O’Brien’s four Cheltenham Gold Cups and three Champion Hurdles in the space of six years truly beggar belief.

However, it is his record in the then Gloucestershire Hurdle, now Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, that is even more remarkable. During an eight-year period he recorded ten victories in the race, including both divisions in three consecutive years from 1955 to 1957.
