You would not think, to look at him at Chantilly on Sunday afternoon, that he was all but finished not long ago. Like the great showman that he is, Frankie Dettori is revelling – as do we – in encore after encore.

Here he is at 46, rising 47, partnering the filly that he describes as the best he's ever ridden (although let's hope that Ouija Board isn't listening), and doing so in what might be quietly termed the autumn of his magnificent career.

If Enable truly is his best filly then she is all the more remarkable for arriving at this stage of his racing life. Good horses come along every now and then but there can only be one 'best'.
