On Saturday Jim Crowley became an excellent and worthy champion jockey. Not only is he a superbly intelligent rider, blessed with a tremendous work ethic and no trace of ego, Crowley also possesses an enlightened attitude to nutrition.

Graham Lee's courageous and commendable decision to openly discuss his battle with depression shone a further light on the subject of mental health, one the Professional Jockeys Association, under the inspired leadership of Paul Struthers, is working hard to make less of a taboo subject.

There are many reasons why an individual can succumb to such a wretched illness. For certain jockeys, one factor can be their individual relationship with food and, in particular, the practice of self-induced vomiting, known widely in racing as flipping.
