Could the extraordinary story of Galileo and Epsom have one last surprise chapter in it? Lingfield trial suggests it might

Could there possibly be one last hurrah? Will Galileo gild a remarkable stallion innings by siring the Derby winner from the last crop of foals to represent him on the racecourse?

It seemed highly improbable at the start of the season. There was no obvious candidate, as there has been so many times over Galileo’s 20-year hegemony, and just 13 foals by him were born in 2022. Yet at the 11th hour, one of them has thrust himself into the Epsom picture.

There was much to like about Stay True, who was inched out by his stablemate Puppet Master in the Lingfield Derby Trial on Saturday. He was posted out wide for much of the race and might even have won with a more vigorous ride, but the best thing about his second racecourse appearance was he put his head down and battled hard. Just like the best of the Galileos.
