Constitution Hill's least impressive performance ever came at Aintree - and it means I couldn't go near him this week

Constitution Hill is the star turn on day one of Aintree’s Grand National meeting on Thursday with the same question hanging over him as there was before the Champion Hurdle: does he still possess the brilliance he showed when winning the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle in 2022 and the following year’s Champion?

There’s another slight concern when it comes to the Aintree Hurdle (3.30). Although he won this race two seasons ago, for me it was the least impressive performance I’ve ever seen from him. I can’t say for certain why, but it’s enough to stop me backing him at a short price.

We shouldn’t read too much into Lossiemouth’s victory in the Mares’ Hurdle at Cheltenham, where she essentially had a schooling session in a slowly run race.
