Tom Kerr's column (October 13)raised some valid points about how the fixture list affects the sport’s participants.

This is an area of focus for the BHA, as well as the other tripartite bodies involved in fixture list policy. While we have made progress putting breaks in place for jump jockeys in recent years, the Flat has proved more challenging to resolve.

Initiatives that have been in place this year include a number of Flat-free Sundays throughout the summer and in the period prior to the Lincoln. We have also looked at rest periods both before and after the turf season, but until now it has not been possible to find a workable solution.
