BHA needs to show leadership after Goodwood incident

There is nothing new about violence on racecourses but Saturday's events at Goodwood need to represent a line in the sand.

The mass brawl made headlines outside the sports pages, the story fuelled by the sickening video of the attack on one of those involved while lying defenceless on the ground.

Goodwood has not been immune to bad behaviour by racegoers in the past but nor is the course alone in having suffered such problems. Suggestions, as some have made, that such behaviour is somehow a phenomenon limited to southern tracks are also wide of the mark.
