Aidan O'Brien's Classic trial dominance is admirable - but it leaves the Derby missing a spark

Even by Aidan O’Brien’s standards it has been a remarkable last seven days.

He has won bigger races and more prize-money in shorter periods of time, but from Los Angeles’s Group 2 success at the Curragh on Monday, through victory in every race at Chester in which he had runners, and collecting every Classic trial under the sun, it has been utter Ballydoyle domination.

O'Brien has resources other trainers can only dream of, but he still has to be able to prepare each horse to peak just the right amount on the day.
