One trainer, one jockey, one horse and one race to watch on Saturday
Trainer
Dan Skelton could be poised for a fruitful Saturday when he fields a host of live chances across the cards.
With 11 entries spread out at Doncaster, Kelso and Newbury, Skelton could come home with a litany of prizes, including a strong fancy in the Morebattle Hurdle with Kingwell-third Faivoir (3.15).
Unbeaten novice Sholokjack also runs at Kelso on Saturday, putting his record on the line for Skelton in the Grade 2 bet365 Premier Novices' Hurdle (1.32), while Amoola Gold seeks Graded success in the Greatwood Gold Cup at Newbury (1.50).
One of Skelton's strongest chances on Saturday comes with Get A Tonic, who is a short-priced favourite in her bid to land Doncaster's Virgin Bet Mares' Novices' Hurdle (2.20), while last-time-out winner Soyouthinksoagain could plunder another Saturday prize in the feature Virgin Bet Grimthorpe Handicap Chase (3.30).
Jockey
Brian Hughes stormed away to a sizable lead in this year's jump jockey championship and more winners could be on the way on Saturday at Kelso.
Hughes is the leading jockey at the course this season and is booked for six of the seven races at one of Kelso's best meetings of the year.
Always dangerous when pairing up with Donald McCain, Hughes's leading chance could be Richmond Lake, who will bid for his first Graded success (1.32) after finishing second to Jonbon in the Rossington Main in January.
Other highlights for Hughes on Saturday include Old Roan winner Nuts Well, who could make a winning return to Kelso in the Listed bet365 Premier Chase (2.40), while Hughes could land his fourth Morebattle Hurdle with the Ben Pauling-trained Severance (3.15).
Horse
Cloth Cap will make his first start since December as he bids to get his Grand National dream back on track in the Grimthorpe Chase (3.30).
The ten-year-old was sent off favourite for last year's Aintree contest but was pulled up and given a subsequent wind operation by trainer Jonjo O'Neill.
Since then, Cloth Cap made a respectable start to the season in two handicap chases before a below-par effort in the Howden Silver Cup at Ascot, where he jumped badly at the second-last fence when third before grinding to stop and refusing the last.
Cloth Cap ran like a horse with an issue and after a near three-month break Saturday's contest will be a strong indicator to the prospects of the chaser ahead of next month's National.
Race
Scotland hosts an exciting renewal of the Morebattle Hurdle, which reverted to a handicap contest in 2021 after almost 40 years as a conditions race.
The race was won last year by The Shunter en route to success in the Plate at the Cheltenham Festival, and this year's running could see another festival contender in Metier, whose entries for the Coral Cup and the County Hurdle would be made more tempting with the £100,000 bonus offered for a Morebattle-festival double.
The Kelso contest has also attracted star quality in Buveur D'Air, the dual-Champion Hurdle winner who makes his first start since last season's Aintree Hurdle.
Trainer Nicky Henderson has reported his 11-year-old in fine form ahead of the Morebattle after suffering a setback at the start of the season and Saturday's race will serve as an important prep race ahead of a return to the Grade 1 Betway Aintree Hurdle.
With the addition of Irish-raider Autumn Evening and last-time-out winner Cormier, this year's Morebattle is primed to offer up plenty of big-race clues for the end of the jump season.
