One trainer, one jockey, one horse and one race to watch at Epsom on Saturday

Trainer

Aidan O'Brien's CV is bursting with some of the sport's biggest prizes and there is little he has not won, but an eighth Derby triumph would mean he stands alone as the most successful trainer in the great race.

Tied with Robert Robson, John Porter and Fred Darling, O'Brien – as usual – is leaving nothing to chance with Mogul, Russian Emperor, Vatican City, Serpentine, Mythical and Amhran Na Bhfiann on duty for Ballydoyle.

They could join Galileo, High Chaparral, Camelot, Ruler Of The World, Australia, Wings Of Eagles and Anthony Van Dyck in the Classic the Coolmore partners cherish above all others.

Jockey

A smile seems permanently attached to Tom Marquand's youthful face, but he may have had pause for thought when jocked off Derby favourite English King in favour of Frankie Dettori.

The talented rider – thought by many a future champion – maintained his dignity, was respectful of the decision and was rewarded when retaining the ride on the unexposed , a 25-1 shot for Epsom.

Trained by Andrew Balding, who also has leading claims with Kameko, Khalifa Sat could emulate the great Troy, who won Goodwood's Cocked Hat Stakes in 1979 before following up in the Derby.

Horse

The sublime Sea The Stars did not start favourite for his Derby, so supporters of – who also landed the 2,000 Guineas like John Oxx's ace – should not necessarily be worried by his position behind English King in the market.

Stamina – as with almost all Newmarket heroes coming here – seems the chief concern for Qatar Racing's colt, whom official handicappers regard as the best horse in the field by 7lb.

However, do not be surprised if a St Leger and Triple Crown bid is mooted if he strikes as his owners are an adventurous bunch and trainer Balding, whose father Ian is part of Flat racing's fabric in Britain, would no doubt be up for it too.

Race

At £500,000, the 241th Derby – delayed a month because of the coronavirus – is down on prize-money, but 16 runners on Epsom's thrill-a-minute slopes promise to keep interest high and headline writers have plenty of threads to ponder.

More Derby delight for Frankie Dettori on English King? O'Brien out on his own or could Highland Chief provide Paul Cole with another magic moment 29 years after the mighty Generous powered home?

There is also the David and Goliath angle of William Muir and Pyledriver so make sure the TV is tuned to ITV or Racing TV at 4.55 on Saturday, and that applies to jumping fans too!
