Once more unto the breach: Spare Parts bids to end busy period on a winning note
Phil McEntee's remarkable recent run with Spare Parts may have come to an end on Thursday evening at Chelmsford, but the trainer remains confident that his charge will put up a bold show back at the Essex venue on Saturday in the Bet totetrifecta at betfred.com Handicap (8.15 ATR).
Spare Parts was bought out of Charlie Hills' yard for just 2,000 guineas and proceeded to reel off four wins in the space of a fortnight after the turn of the year.
The four-year-old defied a 12lb penalty to score over 7f at Lingfield on Wednesday, after which McEntee pinpointed races at Chelmsford on Thursday over 6f and then a mile on Saturday as being the last chances to extend the streak before his revised handicap mark is issued and Spare Parts is given a well-earned break.
Speaking after his second-placed effort at Chelmsford on Thursday evening, McEntee said: "If he’d won today he’d have picked up a penalty, so I’ll take the class drop over a mile on Saturday. He’ll have 10st 7lb and will be galloping all the way to the line."
Portman hoping for no slip-up
There will be occasions when every trainer admits to not knowing exactly what to expect from his or her runner.
But when Indiscretion lines up in the Play Slots at sunbets.co.uk/vegas Fillies' Novice Stakes (3.40 Lingfield), Jonathan Portman can be forgiven for being more in the dark than most.
Indiscretion finished last of 12 on debut before springing a 100-1 shock on her second start at Kempton in October.
A return trip to the same venue the following month ended almost before it had begun with a stumble out of the gate and jockey Daniel Muscutt being unseated.
Hector Crouch takes the ride on what will be the very last day he can claim, having ridden out his 3lb allowance on Thursday afternoon.
It will almost certainly be the first time in his burgeoning career that he will go to post on a horse with the form figures of 01U.
