You have to be careful when you venture up the Ebor Stand on York Racecourse at this time of year.

Get out of the lift at one level and you’ll be among the York womens' luncheon club, and ladies who lunch tend not to welcome male racing journalists with open arms.

Stop at another and you’ll find yourself at the solicitors’ roadshow, no doubt a great bunch of guys but watch out when they charge you £50 to look at the menu.
