No Champion Chase for Patiently as Jefferson plays the long game

Waiting Patiently (Brian Hughes) in winning action at Kempton last Saturday
1 of 1

Waiting Patiently, as short as 8-1 for the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase, has been taken out of the Grade 1 Wednesday feature at the Cheltenham Festival on 14 March.

The impressive winner of a Listed chase over 2m4f at Kempton last Saturday is being kept to the longer trip with the Ryanair Chase over 2m5f a day later at the Festival still an aim.

Ruth Jefferson, assistant to her father Malcolm, said on Friday evening: "We are very happy with the horse and he did a canter this morning.

"The decision to take him out of the Champion was down to the thinking there is little likelihood of heavy ground at Cheltenham and we have decided to stick with the longer trip as he will probably go for the Ascot Chase next.

"Everything will depend on the ground for him but we are looking at one more run before Cheltenham."

The seven-year-old will have his Cheltenham credentials thoroughly tested in the Betfair Ascot Chase on 17 February as the Grade 1 is already the target of former Ryanair Chase winner Cue Card who won the Ascot race as an 11-year-old last year as well as in 2013 when he went on to beat First Lieutenant in the Ryanair just under four weeks later.
