Winter noses ahead of Enable in Horse of the Year race despite defeat

Enable may be the undisputed favourite for next month's Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe but she has a worthy challenger in the race for honours at the 2017 Cartier Racing Awards.

Winter moved four points ahead of John Gosden's filly despite going down to a narrow defeat at the hands of stablemate Hydrangea in the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on Saturday.

The pair dominate the standings in the three-year-old filly category and also lead the way in the chase to be named Horse of the Year.

Decorated Knight moved into third in the older horse section thanks to his Irish Champion Stakes triumph, while there was a change at the top of the division as well, with Prix du Moulin victory pushing Ribchester back in front of Ulysses.

Those three colts round out the top five in the Cartier Horse of the Year standings behind Winter and Enable.

Harry Angel strengthened his grip on the sprint crown with victory in the Sprint Cup at Haydock on Saturday and is now bearing down on Barney Roy and Churchill in the three-year-old colt division.

Points accumulated from Pattern races through the season contribute towards 30 per cent of the final verdict of the Cartier Racing Awards' 'Electoral College', with the remainder split equally between a panel of journalists and experts on the one hand, and a public vote comprising viewers of ITV Racing and readers of the Racing Post and Daily Telegraph on the other.
