Which colts and fillies were the big winners this week?

The Flat season has burst well and truly into life this week, with a host of key Classic trials whetting the appetite for the Qipco Guineas festival, now only a fortnight away, and beyond. Here we take a look at what chance this week's winners have of bagging a big prize.

Barney Roy
Won: JLT Greenham Stakes (Group 3), Newbury, Saturday
Likely target: Qipco 2,000 Guineas, Newmarket

There was an unmistakable feeling of having seen something quite special in the moments after Barney Roy's win at Newbury and Richard Hannon has never hidden his admiration for this son of Excelebration.

His fellow Godolphin runner Dream Castle looked set to blow the field apart with a couple of furlongs to run and indeed he did put four lengths between himself and the rest of his rivals. Unfortunately for him, Barney Roy was two lengths further up the track scoring a most impressive win.

This race can easily go the way of a horse for whom seven furlongs is the furthest they would like to go but in Barney Roy's case, a mile and beyond will prove no problem. He could have a big season, as could the runner-up.

Dabyah
Won: Dubai Duty Free Stakes (Fred Darling Stakes) (Group 3), Newbury, Saturday
Likely target: Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French 1,000 Guineas), Deauville

Although Dabyah shortened in the market for the Qipco 1,000 Guineas, the vibes in the immediate aftermath of her Newbury win were that it will be Deauville and not Newmarket she will be heading to next.

While Dabyah performed well to win on Saturday and gave the impression there was more in the tank, the race did not feel like much to get excited about, with Urban Fox, well beaten in the Group 1 Dubai Fillies' Mile at Newmarket last autumn, filling second place.

Paddy Power went 4-1 about Dabyah winning France's 1,000 Guineas but the bare form of this performance would appear to be insufficient to take that race.

Shutter Speed
Won: Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup EBF Stallions Conditions Stakes, Newbury, Friday
Target: Investec Oaks

John Gosden won this same race in 2015 with subsequent Group 1 winner Star Of Seville and in Shutter Speed he looks to have another excellent filly on his hands – indeed, one who could rate a good deal higher.

At only her second start, following her Yarmouth maiden win last year, Shutter Speed put what looked an intriguing race on paper to bed readily with a smart turn of foot and will almost certainly come on for the outing.

There is plenty of 8-1 about and although some may wonder whether her pedigree is more speed than 1m4f stamina, that could prove her biggest asset. She could be very good.

Eminent
Won: bet365 Craven Stakes (Group 3), Newmarket, Thursday
Target: Qipco 2,000 Guineas

There was a real buzz about Newmarket's Rowley Mile when Eminent won Thursday's Guineas trial to ensure he returns for his date with destiny unbeaten in two starts. Being by Frankel, he is bound to be a popular pick but there is far more substance to him than that.

His Craven win came in the fastest time recorded in the race for more than 50 years and the way he put his giant stride to good use as he loomed up out of the dip left a big impression. He was not stopping after the line either, so his stamina is assured.

Eminent could be vulnerable to a horse with a more potent finishing kick but granted a strong pace to shoot at, it is hard to imagine him being too far from the frame. From looking a formality for Churchill during the winter, the 2,000 Guineas now looks set to be a fascinating contest.

Daban
Won: Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes (Group 3). Newmarket, Wednesday
Target: Qipco 1,000 Guineas

Daban's short-term future is no doubt closely linked to that of Dabyah in the same ownership, but it seems the 1,000 Guineas is the preference at the moment.

Rated only 81 coming into the race, the win represented a big step forward and Daban did it well, giving the impression an extra furlong will be within her reach.

While she is more than entitled to find further improvement and well worth her place in the field, it would be hard to argue this display was anything like as impressive as Rhododendron's demolition of the Dubai Fillies' Mile field last year. As long as she sets the standard, it is hard to imagine the prize going anywhere else.

The Feilden Stakes one-two, Khalidi and Salouen, are my choices for the DerbyCredit: Edward Whitaker

Khalidi
Won: bet365 Feilden Stakes (Listed), Newmarket, Tuesday
Target: Investec Derby

Golden Horn took this race en route to Derby glory two years ago and, while that is not Khalidi's fault, it doubtless impacts on the assessment of his own win.

This looked a thoroughly ordinary running and while Khalidi and others who contested it could prove progressive throughout the year, it is impossible to imagine him troubling the judge at Epsom.

Indeed, Khalidi is not entered in any Classics and while Golden Horn was supplemented for the Derby, John Gosden was not in the mood to suggest he was considering anything similar with his winner this time.
