Setback rules Great St Wilfrid hero Mattmu out of Ayr Gold Cup
Great St Wilfrid Handicap winner Mattmu will miss Saturday's William Hill Ayr Gold Cup, for which he had been 16-1 co-third favourite with the sponsors, after picking up an injury.
"He has sprained a joint and he won't be able to run," said trainer Tim Easterby.
Mattmu, who returned to training this season after a spell at stud, was an all-the-way winner on the far side at Ripon. Though he had been put up 5lb for that three-quarters-of-a-length victory, he was still due to race off a mark 10lb below his peak BHA rating in the £200,000 Ayr sprint.
Only the top 25 declared for the race on Thursday will run in the Gold Cup, with those eliminated eligible for the consolation Silver Cup, also on Saturday, and Bronze Cup on Friday.
The Charlie Hills-trained Shanghai Glory was on Monday the 10-1 favourite with the sponsors.
