Progressive Defoe limbers up for Leger with effortless workout

Frankie Dettori was back on the emphatic Great Voltigeur winner for the first time since their Knavesmire show, but there were no such fireworks this time around with only four days to go until the Group 2 Prix Niel. The son of Frankel was full of his usual exuberance on the Limekilns long gallop and heads to Chantilly in top order.

Stoute will have Stage 6 of the Tour Of Britain thundering close to his door at Harlech House on the Bury Road on Friday and the recent Goodwood winner led the Freemason Lodge peloton up the trial ground. Saeed Suhail's colt doesn't have many miles on the clock for a four-year-old and runs this weekend in the Irish Champion Stakes with James Doyle on board.

For once Willie Ryan lost the ride on Godolphin's top speedster who he has partnered at home since his early days as a juvenile. This time around, the former Sir Henry Cecil stalwart rode lead horse First Voyage as a hare for James Doyle to pass on Saturday's Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup candidate on the short gallop.

This unraced Cape Cross juvenile was named Electrical Storm until recently and certainly lit up the Limekilns long gallop when covering seven furlongs. Bred for a mile-plus, the colt could head a stream of two-year-old runners from Godolphin Stables at the end of the season.

Roger Varian

Varian was sticking to an old Carlburg Stables tradition of being first out on the gallops on Tuesday morning where his ammunition on the Limekilns trial ground included this progressive St Leger candidate. Veteran John Lowe charted a smooth passage on the grey, who will be a very special exhibit at Newmarket Open Day on September 17 if he can score on Town Moor the previous day.
