Mags Mullins ’gelding looked the moral winner of the Cheltenham Bumper, having gone the scenic route from the off and then hitting the front too soon. The form was given a massive boost when his conqueror Fayonagh easily followed up at Punchestown last week and Debuchet did his bit for it when going one better at Limerick. A genuine, likeable sort with a turn of foot, he goes well on decent ground which has become a regular occurrence at the festival and is a really exciting prospect for novice hurdles next season, with the Supreme the obvious target.

Ante-post betting seems more of a minefield than ever these days, with generally skinnier odds offered about horses with multiple alternative targets, but there are exceptions nevertheless.The sponsors are 20-1 the field for the BetVictor Gold Cup – the big Cheltenham handicap they have taken over from Paddy Power – and although that's still a long way off it's nowhere near as distant as the Cheltenham Festival or Grand National, by which time there is so much more scope for injury.Neil Mulholland has already earmarked highly talented Sandown novice handicap chase winner Shantou Village for the race, and he looks the type to excel there, provided the ground is not unusually soft. He jumps really well for a novice and he's not even favourite. He's a 25-1 chance.

Everything that could have gone wrong For Fayonagh at Cheltenham did, yet she still won the Champion Bumper. At Punchestown last week things were a whole lot smoother as she made all to justify her spot as the leading bumper performer in Britain and Ireland. She looks top class and has already showed an appetite for jumping at home according to trainer Gordon Elliott. Big-race options are plentiful but her pedigree suggests a staying trip could see her at her best and 16-1 for the Neptune looks huge at this stage. Of course the Supreme Novices' and the two mares' races are viable alternatives, but her Neptune odds make the risk a worthwhile one.

The Dorset trainer could have been champion trainer in the season just finished but for the fact his team's form dipped between January and March. The fact he accrued more than £2 million in prize-money with fewer than 60 winners was an amazing effort and shows his yard is now dripping with quality. With Ann and Alan Potts (arguably a growing force in Britain) giving his yard ample ammunition, the current 20-1 looks too big. It's been a while since anybody has broken the Henderson-Nicholls stranglehold, but Tizzard is the man to do it.

Djakadam: Walsh says the two-time Gold Cup runner-up will be hard to overlook

He has won a lot of plaudits for going close in three Gold Cups but champion trainer Willie Mullins will surely want to land a championship race withDjakadam, if only to shake off the undeserved tag of nearly horse. Without an error at the last fence of this season's Punchestown Gold Cup, Djakadam might have held off Sizing John and with his chances of winning the Gold Cup surely decreasing, it's perhaps time to try something different. At 20-1 he would be a decent bet for the King George VI Chase.

Watching Coneygree jumping fluently out in front at Punchestown was a stirring sight, and it is not too much of a stretch to think he could replicate that performance at Newbury. But for a mistake two out he could have gone closer in the Punchestown Gold Cup, and he kept going right to the line on his first start since November. It would need to be a colossal weight-carrying performance, but it has been done before [Denman 2007 and 2009]. Hopefully he will stay sound and connections will get to test the theory.
