The public has spoken. Seldom Is Precious it is. That is the new name of Joseph O'Brien's four-year-old daughter of Presenting, out of Rare Gesture, after she came first in a Twitter poll which drew a staggering 9,224 votes in 24 hours.

O'Brien reached out to the public on Twitter and sought suggestions, stressing that the name "can't be longer than 18 characters and must be clean!".

There were more than 3,000 names suggested and the final was whittled down to four – I'll Be Me, Galveston Girl, A Lady Like You and Seldom Is Precious.

The first three were all Glen Campbell songs/lyrics that fitted the filly's pedigree, and the last a name that the trainer simply liked.

There was only four per cent between the four finalists but Seldom Is Precious came out on top with 27 per cent of the vote. Galveston Girl was second with 26 per cent, while A Lady Like You attracted 24 per cent and I'll Be Me got 23 per cent.

O'Brien expressed his delight with the name and admitted to being overwhelmed by the response from the public on Twitter.

The trainer said: "Seldom Is Precious is a lovely name and I'm delighted with it. It was Kevin Blake who came up with the idea. We thought we'd put it out on Twitter for bit of craic. I cannot believe the reaction it got. I thought there might be seven or eight suggestions, not over 3,000!"

He added: "It can be hard to come up with names and, when you're training horses there are a lot of other things to be concentrating on without spending time on names.

"It's definitely something I'd think about doing again, and we certainly got a nice name out of it."
