McCoy and Dettori take lead roles as jump and Flat jockeys clash at Olympia

Greats from both racing codes will clash at Olympia on Friday as a team of former jump jockeys take on their Flat counterparts as part of Race Night at the world famous London International Horse Show.

The teams will be captained by Sir Anthony McCoy and Frankie Dettori, and the duo have convinced a host of famous names to join them in the Markel Champions Challenge, which is staged in aid of the Injured Jockeys Fund.

Every member of McCoy's team is retired, with Richard Dunwoody, Peter Scudamore, John Francome and Charlie Swann boasting 47 British and Irish champion jockey titles between them, with more than 10,000 races won.

The Flat boys are not too shabby an outfit either, with Dettori having assembled a more contemporary group of riders. Ryan Moore, fresh from Group 1 glory aboard Highland Reel in Hong Kong last weekend, is joined by Richard Hughes, Jamie Spencer and Jim Crowley.

It was Dettori's team who came out on top last year, which convinced McCoy – who did not ride 12 months ago – to put together a bid to win back the crown the jumps team took when the event was previously staged in 2014.

The teams have been coached by Graham Fletcher and Olympic champion Nick Skelton.

Scudamore on Thursday spoke of his pride at being involved in the event and said raising money for the IJF, rather than winning the competition, would be foremost on everybody's mind.

"It's a lot of old men going around in circles for a great cause," he said. "The IJF means an awful lot to all of us so it was a great honour to be asked to take part."

The competition will witness the jockeys tackle six to eight show jumps of 1.10m in height, with each round timed.

Times will then be added up to determine the winning team.

The action gets under way at 6.45pm and is available to watch via the BBC's red button service or on Sky channel 980.
