More big-race woe for Frankie as he misses Cracksman Derby ride

Frankie Dettori has had to admit defeat in his race to be fit to ride Epsom third Cracksman in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh on Saturday, meaning the plum ride on the joint-favourite is up for grabs.

Cracksman, the John Gosden-trained son of Frankel who runs in the colours of 2015 Derby winner Golden Horn, finished a length back in third at Epsom after missing his intended trial in the Dante Stakes.

He shares 5-2 favouritism for the Irish equivalent with Epsom winner Wings Of Eagles, with Andre Fabre's Waldgeist next best at 3-1.

After riding Cracksman in two of his three starts, Dettori has also ruled out a return in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown on July 8, and instead has set his sights on a return at the Newmarket July meeting a calendar month after suffering an injury at Yarmouth on June 13.

A week after having to abandon his Royal Ascot book of rides, which included King's Stand victor Lady Aurelia and Gold Cup hero Big Orange, Dettori has flown home to Sardinia for a week in a bid to speed up the recovery of his arm and shoulder injuries from a fall in the paddock two weeks ago.

'Two small fractures'

Racing's most recognisable jockey will return to see his specialist next Monday but his business manager Pete Burrell said: "His specialist has told him rest is the best medicine for his injuries.

"He has two small fractures on the top of his left shoulder and he has seen his specialist twice – he's happy with how the injury is mending.

"The aspirations are that with it nearly two weeks since he was injured Frankie will be back at the July meeting at Newmarket in three weeks' time."

Dettori, 46, was injured in the paddock when he was thrown off Tivoli, the John Gosden-trained favourite maiden in the first race at Yarmouth on 13 June.

He returned to ride Shutter Speed in the Prix de Diane at Chantilly bidding to complete the English and French Oaks double having won on Enable at Epsom.

But a week later he tweeted on the morning of Royal Ascot that he would not be riding at a meeting that has yielded 56 previous winners.
