Buywise connections set their sights on Grand National bid

Buywise scored at Sandown under dual Grand National winner Leighton Aspell

Buywise has emerged as a surprise contender for the Randox Health Grand National after his dramatic victory in the Veterans' Final at Sandown last week.

The 11-year-old mounted a late charge under Leighton Aspell to finish ahead of Pete The Feat and land the £100,000 prize. Trainer Evan Williams has now set his sights on Aintree with Buywise, who finished 12th two years ago and on Friday was available at 50-1 with various bookmakers.

"I never thought we’d try again but he’s a bit older and stays better," said Williams. "I was going to swerve everything with him but we’ve got to have a crack at Aintree now.

"After the way he jumped and stayed at Sandown I thought, 'For god's sake stop messing around and just go for the Grand National.' It's a shot to nothing really."

In ending a three-year spell without a win, Buywise finally achieved the big victory his talent had suggested was possible and convinced owner Hywel Jones to give him a chance in April.

Jones said: "Leighton has won the Grand National twice. He knows what it takes and he thinks Buywise could be the right type."
