Baker on course to witness Law take bronze in Gold Cup
George Baker took his latest step on the road to recovery with a day out at Royal Ascot on Thursday, where he witnessed his St Leger hero Harbour Law outrun odds of 33-1 to finish third in the Gold Cup.
Baker, who may attend the final day of the meeting on Saturday, enjoyed an afternoon at Goodwood earlier in the month in preparation for his Ascot visit, just four months after a horrific fall in a pile-up on the frozen lake at St Moritz.
He said: “It's great to be here at Ascot, although a little bit strange as a spectator and not being in the weighing room. If someone had said to me at the end of February I would be walking and able to go along to Royal Ascot though, I wouldn’t have believed them.”
The feature race saw two of Baker’s favourites take one another on, with the rider’s Prix du Cadran winner Quest For More, who finished a well beaten 12th, behind the placed Harbour Law.
Baker said: “Harbour Law ran a great race and will be very competitive in the staying division – he’ll be even better with some cut in the ground. I was also absolutely delighted to see Kieran Shoemark ride a big winner in the last.”
Baker continues to makes good strides in his rehabilitation after suffering bleeding on the brain from the fall in February.
He said: “It's all going as well as it can in terms of my recovery and I'm doing plenty of work down at Oaksey House."
