Newmarket tips: three 2,000 Guineas contenders who could outrun their odds

The market suggests this is a wide-open Qipco 2,000 Guineas (3.40), with seven colts quoted at single-figure odds and favourite Wembley as big as 4-1 with some bookmakers.

Given such a scenario it would be no surprise if there was a shock result, so here's three runners at decent prices with the potential to outrun their odds on Saturday.

3.40 Newmarket Saturday: Qipco 2,000 Guineas racecard and betting

Lucky Vega

Lucky Vega impressively landed a Group 1 at the Curragh, the Phoenix Stakes, by three and a half lengths last August.

That looked a strong edition of the prestigious 6f contest at the time, yet the son of Lope De Vega annihilated his nine rivals.

He gained valuable experience of the notorious Newmarket ridges and undulations when second to Supremacy in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes, finishing over two lengths clear of the richly talented Minzaal.

Don't be put off by Supremacy's Ascot blowout on Wednesday; that Middle Park run is a piece of excellent form.

The million-dollar question is the trip. Will Lucky Vega get a mile? If he does he's probably a genuine 6-1 shot, rather than the top price of 22-1 the bookies offer.

Chindit

Horses who are not flashy often get underestimated in markets, and Chindit, available at 14-1 in a place, is a prime example.

The Richard Hannon-trained contender has landed four of his five starts, yet the winning margin has never been greater than a length and three-quarters.

That suggests Chindit is a colt who will always only be workmanlike in victory, and there's a strong suspicion he has plenty more to offer in Group 1 company this term.

His Greenham Stakes success demonstrated that he had trained on from two to three – something which several of the chief protagonists have yet to prove – and his trainer knows what it takes to win a Guineas.

Chindit simply didn't fire when behind the likes of Wembley and Thunder Moon in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket last October, but the fact that he was sent off 9-2 third-favourite in a field of 14 tells its own story.

Van Gogh

Van Gogh, at 10-1 the biggest-priced contender of the Aidan O'Brien trio, doesn't necessarily look the third-string based on a rampant four-length October success in the Group 1 Criterium International at Saint-Cloud.

The ground was heavy that day, but it may not have been entirely the deep surface which explains his improvement.

Van Gogh clearly stays a mile particularly well and has experience of Newmarket from his Group 3 Autumn Stakes second to One Ruler.
