New protective vests to become mandatory in Irish weighroom

From January 1 it will be compulsory for all jockeys in Ireland to wear the new level-two back protectors, the Turf Club's chief medical officer Adrian McGoldrick has revealed.

Most riders currently wear level-one protectors due to their light weight, whereas event or showjumping riders wear up to level three, which offer significant more protection to the chest, back and abdomen.

McGoldrick admitted he was unhappy with the current state of protectors jockeys are wearing, both riding out in the mornings and on the track, and has been committed to the development of a new lightweight vest that offers more protection.
