It's definitely Maybe but Tinkler shares spoils after dead-heat

Nigel Tinkler, who has been training for nearly 40 years, matched his best monthly winners total in dramatic circumstances as Maybe Even Never shared victory after a dead-heat was called in the 6f novice.

The North Yorkshire trainer recorded a remarkable 65,024-1 four-timer across Beverley and Redcar on Saturday, and his hot form continued as the judge could not split the two-year-old gelding and the David Barron-trained Sunday Justice.

Watch a replay of the dead-heat

After an enthralling battle up the home straight, Sunday Justice – ridden by Connor Beasley – looked to have been headed before sticking his neck out at the line to force a share of the spoils with the Phil Dennis-ridden Maybe Even Never, who was conceding 7lb to his rival.

Tinkler said: "I thought we'd definitely won until the last stride – the other one had his head down and we had our head up, so I could tell it was very close.

"It was no surprise when the dead-heat was called and it was a good performance from both horses."

Owned by Douglas Pryde and David van der Hoeven, who won the Grand National in 2013 with Auroras Encore, Maybe Even Never was Tinkler's 14th winner in August, matching the tally he set in July 2019.

"It's absolutely brilliant and great for the owners. He missed the break a bit and got there a bit sooner than the jockey would have liked, but he's a nice horse and has done that well under a penalty.

"We're just concentrating on what's next. The last few days have been good but we're flat out every day at the moment."

Flotus back to her best

Flotus was cut to 8-1 (from 16) for the Cheveley Park Stakes after bouncing back to form in style when trouncing her opposition in the Listed Ripon Champion Two Yrs Old Trophy.

The manner of the Simon and Ed Crisford-trained filly’s debut victory at Goodwood saw her sent off the 9-2 favourite for the Group 3 Albany at Royal Ascot, but she disappointed on heavy ground there and had failed to make the places on two subsequent starts at Newmarket and Newbury.

But Flotus put those runs behind her when making all by four and a half lengths under Silvestre de Sousa, and was subsequently shortened for the Newmarket Group 1 on September 25.
