Mullins calls on top US riders for his Belmont Gold Cup pair
Willie Mullins will be chasing big prizes on two continents this weekend when Wickow Brave and Clondaw Warrior represent him in the Belmont Gold Cup Invitational Stakes in New York on Friday, before Shaneshill attempts to win him a fifth Grande Course de Haies d’Auteuil in France on Sunday.
Mullins has enlisted the services of top US riders for his Belmont runners. John Velazquez is booked for Clondaw Warrior, who finished second in the American St Leger at Arlington last August, while Javier Castellano is set to partner last year’s Irish St Leger winner Wicklow Brave.
Mullins said on Tuesday: “Both horses travelled over well. They worked on the track this morning and everything's fine with them.”
Shaneshill, who won the Grade 2 Prix la Barka at Auteuil last month, will be attempting to emulate the trainer’s Thousand Stars (2010 and 2011), Rule Supreme (2004) and Nobody Told Me (2003) by landing the French Champion Hurdle on Sunday.
On the same card Mullins will be represented by AES Champion Four-Year-Old Hurdle winner Bapaume. He is set to line up in the Grade 1 Prix Alain du Breil, in which stablemates Dandy Mag and Meri Devie are also likely to run.
