Morrison sets sights on Melbourne with Deauville winner Marmelo
Hughie Morrison has confirmed the Emirates Melbourne Cup as the target for his Prix Kergorlay winner Marmelo.
Connections had spoken of a shot at the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in the wake of his Deauville victory this month. However, speaking to At The Races on Wednesday morning, Morrison revealed thoughts have now turned to the November 7 Flemington showpiece, for which he featured among a strong contingent of European entries on Tuesday.
"The owners are very keen to go and I think he's a progressive four-year-old that we can still find improvement from," said Morrison. "He's a big horse who could carry the weight and if you're going to go, this is probably the year you've got to go.
"It's one of the great Flat races in the world. The Derby here is the greatest race and behind that you have the Arc and then the Melbourne Cup, probably a close third in my book."
The Group 2 Kergorlay was won by Protectionist en route to Flemington glory in 2014.
