Laura Pearson has been making a name for herself in recent weeks and more people will sit up and take note of the in-form apprentice after she produced a brilliant ride on Yorkshire Pirlo.

The Phillip Makin-trained juvenile totally blew the start and was tailed off at halfway in the 6f nursery, with the colt – named after the nickname given to Leeds United's midfield lynchpin Kalvin Phillips – trading at a high of 190 in-running on Betfair.

However, Pearson did not panic and was rewarded for a calm and calculated ride with an ultimately cosy two-and-a-half length success.

"He was a little monkey out the gates but a lot of horses wanted to go forward and they got racing very early, which worked in my favour," said the 7lb claimer.

"Everybody has told me the best thing to do in races is keep a cool head and I try to do that. I went up the inside and he ran on lovely to win comfortably in the end."

The 19-year-old, a daughter of former point-to-point rider Craig Pearson, graduated from pony racing before cutting her teeth with a couple of seasons in Arab racing.

Now based with Newmarket trainer Tom Clover having started out with John Ryan, Pearson has won on her last three rides and gained seven winners from 17 mounts this month.

"I'm very fortunate to have some lovely trainers backing me and my agent Steven Croft is doing a great job," she said.
