Luminate on Diane trail for Head and travelling Highclere supporters

Luminate is the star attraction at Saint-Cloud on Monday as Freddy Head puts the final touches in preparation for a tilt at the Prix de Diane Longines on June 17.

Unbeaten at two, Highclere's filly delighted her followers when fighting to get back up after being headed by Homerique in the Prix Penelope over course and distance at the start of the month.

Head pointed to the Cleopatre as the likely next point of call and Luminate would be rated almost 19lb clear of the best of her rivals by the official French handicapper before her Group 3 penalty is taken into account.

Highclere's Harry Herbert said: "She's so exciting. Freddy's delighted with her and on all known form she should be very competitive – hard to beat, I suspect.

"The trainer is very pleased with her and she's now come in her coat. She was still pretty hairy when she won last time."

The two feasible issues would be quicker ground – though there is some rain around the Paris area on Monday – and an unexposed rival among those yet to acquire an official mark.

In that context, 11-time race winner Andre Fabre saddles Longchamp maiden winner Enchanting Skies, who now represents Qatar Racing, Barbara Keller and Ecurie des Monceaux, having run in the colours of Markus Jooste first up.

Bateel rounded off a stellar 2017 with a gutsy win in the Prix Vermeille and an equally courageous effort when second to Hydrangea in the British Champions Fillies & Mares at Ascot.

Trainer Francis Graffard avoided the temptation of running in the Arc, but that is likely to be her end-of-season target this time if all goes well between now and October.

"I was delighted to have her back in training this year and we've taken our time with her," said Graffard. "This is a good distance to start her off over and after that we'll look at the big mile and a half races. It's a comeback run but she's in good form."
