Jamie Gormley booked for Hamilton riding honours but set to miss celebrations

The life of the jockey demands a quick shift of focus after victory, but spare a thought for leading apprentice Jamie Gormley, who could pick up one – possibly two – riding awards at Hamilton on Monday, only to miss the celebrations because of riding obligations at Newcastle.

Gormley has 11 winners at Hamilton this season and although he is assured of being champion apprentice at the Scottish course, he also holds a narrow lead in the battle for the overall jockeys' title at the track.

He is set to be supported by a big group of regulars from his father's pub in Langholm in the Borders on Hamilton's final card of the season, where his only ride is on Raise A Billion for trainer Alan Berry (2.00), but then has to dash south of the border for five rides at Newcastle.

He said on Sunday: "It’s brilliant to have all the support because it’s one of my local tracks. My dad sponsors me as well. It’s just good to have the local support from the town and everybody behind you.

“It’s a little bit disappointing I have to shoot off after my only ride to ride at Newcastle, as I’d like to have stayed with them, but it’s got to be done. I’m sure they’ll have plenty of fun without me!"

Asked why he does especially well at Hamilton, Gormley added: "I love it because it’s so unique, even to Scottish racing. Just the way you go down the hill and then you’re kicking back up the hill, it suits my style of riding."
