Goldie hoping Nicholas T can add a success closer to home after Euchen triumph
After a super Saturday of big-money races the Monday programme is far more low-key, with Ayr laying claim to the day's feature with the Class 2 Parkdean Resorts Glasgow Fair Handicap (4.05).
The mile handicap has something in common with one of Saturday's big races in that it has local trainer Jim Goldie hoping to maintain his winning run after Euchen Glen's success in the John Smith's Cup at York.
Goldie runs Nicholas T who, had he beaten Ventura Knight over course and distance a week ago, could have lined up with his stablemate in the York feature.
"If he'd picked up a penalty or beaten Big Country in the Zetland Gold Cup earlier in the year he could have been running with Euchen Glen," said Goldie, who has had six winners at his local track this year and 54 in the last five seasons.
"The key to Nicholas T is the pace. He's a hold-up horse and needs a strong pace, so he's vulnerable in these smaller fields – the York race would really have suited him."
Nicholas T faces seven rivals, with Ventura Knight's trainer Mark Johnston running two in Poet's Society and Vale Of Kent.
Hogan's hurdles hope
Denis Hogan successfully combines the roles of trainer and rider and will be hoping for another double act when dual bumper winner Macgiloney reverts to hurdles in the 2m4f maiden (8.00) at Killarney.
Macgiloney, who landed a bumper by ten lengths at Bellewstown on his most recent start nine days ago, finished third on both his previous attempts over hurdles, and Hogan said: "Macgiloney is improving all the time. He came out of his Bellewstown race very well and ran well over the course and trip the last time he raced over hurdles in May.
"We were going to wait and go for a maiden hurdle at Galway but we thought this race looked a good opportunity."
The five-year-old faces 12 rivals, including the Joseph O'Brien-trained Achiever, who will be blinkered for the first time, and the Willie Mullins runner Easy Game, who will be making his Irish debut having been fourth in France on his only previous start.
Improved performer back on Flat
Also at Killarney, Ingleby Mackenzie, winner of handicap hurdles at Tramore and Gowran Park last month, reverts to the Flat in the 1m3f handicap (7.30) and for the first time since joining Eoin Doyle's Mooncoin, County Kilkenny yard late last year.
A winner over a mile and a half at Doncaster a year ago when trained by Mick Channon, the four-year-old is joint top weight.
Doyle said of Ross Coakley's mount: "Ingleby Mackenzie is in great form. He came out of his Gowran Park win well, goes on the ground and stays well, so we're hoping he can continue winning ways back on the Flat. We think he'll be very competitive."
Ingleby Mackenzie faces 14 rivals, including the James Barrett-trained Shes An Art, a course-and-distance winner two years ago.
One for Dallas fans
Fans of Dallas, the vintage TV series, may like a punt at Windsor in the evening as Bobby Ewing makes his debut for Simon Crisford in the 6f novice (6.20).
The Charm Spirit gelding is owned by Chelsea Thoroughbreds, who enjoy naming their horses after famous fictional characters from the big and small screen.
Bobby Ewing, who was played by Patrick Duffy, was essentially the hero of the long-running American TV series of the 1980s and was a character defined as always wanting to do the right thing.
Hopefully the colt has proved straightforward at home and eager to please. But should things go wrong, punters could always convince themselves it was just a dream...
