Minzaal sprints into the season’s top 20 scorers with Haydock romp
Minzaal proved the most popular winner of Saturday’s Betfair Sprint Cup with Tote Ten to Follow players as 2.7 per cent of stables, more than any other contender in the Haydock Group 1, hold the Owen Burrows-trained four-year-old in their teams.
They reaped 31.30 points for this Group 1 success and that edges the Shadwell-owned sprinter into the season’s top 20 scorers with a total of 57.90 points, but nowhere near his Haydock rival Naval Crown. He toiled home in 11th but remains the season’s second most prolific points scorer on 130.40 points. Only Baaeed, with 156.77, is ahead of him on the leaderboard.
The weekend’s other Group 1, the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp, went to the Ed Walker-trained Dreamloper, who was landing her second top-flight win in France this season and picked up 34.50 points for 0.6 per cent of stable owners.
It was a race that was marred by the death of the 2,000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes winner Coroebus, who figures in exactly a third of all teams.
West Wind Blows showed he he is a colt with potential at the top level when taking the Group 3 Prix du Prince d’Orange, adding 20.70 points to his seasonal tally for 0.6 per cent of stables and raising prospects of more to come this autumn.
At Ascot, the James Fanshawe-trained Fresh landed his second big Ascot 7f handicap this season, adding 18.30 points to his tally. The likeable five-year-old has now notched 41.65 points for 0.4 per cent of teams.
