'Fantastic opportunity' as July heralds revolution in pool betting
Bill Barber looks at how the market will change when the Tote monopoly ends
It is a good job Nigel Roddis and Neil Goulden are not superstitious. The men heading the new pool-betting business backed by the majority of Britain's racecourses will be launching the operation on Friday, July 13, the day when the Tote's 89-year monopoly ends.
When Betfred won the race to buy the Tote in 2011, they were given a seven-year exclusive licence to run pool betting on British racing.
That runs out in July, meaning that for the first time there will be competing pools into which British punters will be able to bet.
