Horse transporters are having to wade through a sea of post-Brexit red tape in order to be able to move horses between Britain and the European Union, an issue causing "significant difficulties" according to one leading company.

BBA Shipping's managing director Kevin Needham said it was "one of the hot potatoes of the moment in our industry".

UK authorisations to transport horses had previously been valid in the rest of the EU, and vice versa, but that is no longer the case following the end of the Brexit transition period on December 31.
