Beating the odds has become a modern media phenomenon. Millions of people stuck in their daily ruts draw inspiration from the deeds of the less fortunate, from victims who overcome cancer to those who make light of serious injury.
This phenomenon is a celebration of life itself, of how precious is each day, irrespective of the prism through which those whose health has been randomly assaulted are obliged to see it.
It has been an uplifting and educational experience all round, although the genre has now gained inexorable momentum. Demand for such stories is so acute that the boundaries of what constitutes beating the odds have become blurred.
