Medics on hand to aid stricken work-riders in Newmarket

The standard of care on offer to work-riders involved in accidents on Newmarket's gallops has been made significantly stronger with the introduction of heath medics.

Two specially trained members of Jockey Club Estates staff will now be able to administer a high level of emergency care to seriously injured riders, bridging the gap between an accident taking place and the arrival of an ambulance. There are an average of 17 ambulance callouts to the gallops each year.

Previously, basic first aid had been the extent of the training undertaken by those supervising Newmarket's gallops, but heath medics will now be able to more effectively respond to those with potentially life-threatening injuries, such as catastrophic bleeds or spinal injuries.
