Epsom hero Masar and Cracksman head the race to be crowned horse of the year

Masar: the Derby winner heads the Cartier Horse of the Year early standings

Epsom Group 1 winners Masar and Cracksman head the early standings in the race to be crowned Cartier Horse of the Year.

The Godolphin-owned Derby hero Masar, who stormed to a length-and-a-half success over Dee Ex Bee on Saturday, has 68 points, four more than Coronation Cup scorer Cracksman.

Anthony Oppenheimer’s four-year-old, who had launched his 2018 campaign with victory in the Group 1 Prix Ganay at Longchamp, produced a stirring late charge under Frankie Dettori to catch 33-1 shot Salouen close home and win by a head.

The Karl Burke-trained three-year-old filly Laurens, who finished second in the 1,000 Guineas before landing the Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary at Longchamp, is in third place on 56 points.

Laurens: the dual Group 1 winner heads the Cartier three-year-old fillies standing

Jungle Cat (24 points) and Sands Of Mali (24) are joint leaders in the sprint division, but they are likely to face serious challenges over the coming months from Harry Angel (16) and Battaash (16) who have both made winning starts, landing the Group 2 Duke of York Stakes and Group 2 Temple Stakes.

The 28th Cartier Awards will be presented at the Dorchester Hotel in London on November 13. There are eight equine awards, delivered through a combination of points earned by horses in Pattern races (30 per cent), combined at the end of season with the opinions of a panel of racing journalists/handicappers (35 per cent) and votes from readers of the Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph plus ITV Racing viewers (35 per cent).
