Marvellous Minding out on her own in Newmarket poll

The most recent winner of the 1,000 Guineas has been crowned as the people's favourite from the last 50 years as Minding topped the Racing Post poll.

Although not quite as dominant as 2,000 Guineas poll winner Frankel, the Aidan O'Brien-trained filly, who rates as one of the most exciting horses in training, collected just over half the total votes with her brilliant Newmarket success laying the foundations for a remarkable three-year-old campaign.

How did she get to the 1,000 Guineas?

By supersire Galileo out of dual Group 1 scorer Lillie Langtry, Minding suffered defeat on debut at Leopardstown but returned to the track two weeks later to get off the mark. She chased home Ballydoyle on her next start in the Debutante Stakes before turning the tables on her much-vaunted stablemate in the Moyglare Stud Stakes, displaying the lethal blend of speed and stamina that has become her trademark.

She went into the winter as the Guineas favourite after thriving at her first try at the trip in the Fillies' Mile with a commanding four-and-a-half length success over the previously unbeaten Nathra.

What happened at Newmarket?

Minding carried the strongest form into the race and was sent off 11-10 favourite off the back of strong vibes about her preparation through the winter.

Up against a deep field containing 15 rivals, she was able to power clear impressively, despite racing handily under Ryan Moore, and led home an O'Brien 1-2-3 by three and half lengths from old rival Ballydoyle and Alice Springs.

Such was her dominance in providing her trainer with a tenth Newmarket Classic and landmark 250th success at Group 1 level, Minding was quoted at 5-2 with a run for the Investec Derby.

What happened next?

Talk of a Derby bid for Minding had cooled by the time she travelled to Curragh for the Irish 1,000 Guineas and she suffered a narrow defeat to Jet Setting. She bounced back in scintillating style, coming from a tricky position to win the Investec Oaks and become only the seventh filly in 50 years to complete the Classic double.

She ended the season with three more Group 1 wins from her next four starts, in the Pretty Polly, Nassau and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. There appears to be many more chapters still to write and she began her four-year-old campaign with victory in the Mooresbridge Stakes.
