Martin's sister O'Leary plotting Heartbreak City's big-race downfall
Cathy O'Leary will find herself in a very strange situation on Sunday. O'Leary is entrusted with getting Heartbreak City safely to Leopardstown, but she has spent the last few weeks plotting the Melbourne Cup runner-up's downfall in the Coral.ie Handicap Hurdle.
O'Leary is trainer Tony Martin's sister. She also works for him and will drive to Leopardstown the horsebox containing the red-hot 5-2 favourite Heartbreak City. But she is also the trainer of Conright Boy, who is one of Heartbreak City's rivals in the €100,000 contest.
She said: "It's quite funny because I'll be driving Heartbreak City to the races on Sunday. I do a lot of the driving for Tony. My husband will take Conright Boy."
Conright Boy bounced back to form when winning at Fairyhouse on New Year's Day and O'Leary is not too downbeat about a 6lb rise for that comfortable triumph, although she would like to see conditions ease from the current description of yielding.
"Conright Boy is in cracking form and I couldn't be happier with him, but the problem is the ground," O'Leary said. "I'd love to see it pour with rain for the next few days as all of his best form is with plenty of cut in the ground.
"He got a 6lb rise but it could have been worse. Hopefully Robbie Power will be able to ride, and he won the race last year."
And if Conright Boy doesn't win, would she like to see her brother do the business?
"Of course!" she laughed. "If my fella doesn't win I hope Heartbreak City does it for Tony. That would be the next best result."
