Marathon trip: Lingfield introduces new race for stayers on Wednesday
Lingfield, still basking in the reflected glory of the Derby and Oaks winners having run in a trial at the course this year, has created a new race for stayers that will be the fourth-longest on the Flat.
The John Howe Retirement Handicap will be run over 2m4f and 44 yards on Wednesday, which places it ahead of the Gold Cup at Ascot in distance but behind the daddy of them all – Royal Ascot's Queen Alexandra Stakes over 2m5f143y.
The inaugural running of the 0-75 handicap on the turf track has attracted a field of eight, chasing a first prize of £3,040, and James Eustace is one of the trainers backing the new venture.
