Living the Dream: Gosden points Wokingham gamble at July Cup

Dreamfield is likely to step straight into a Group 1 on his next start with this month's Darley July Cup his next target, according to trainer John Gosden.

Owned by Godolphin, who are also responsible for July Cup favourite Blue Point and last year's defending champion Harry Angel, Dreamfield narrowly failed to land a substantial gamble when second in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot last month, a result bookmakers estimate saved them £3 million across the industry.

Much of the momentum behind Dreamfield in the Wokingham was based around the belief he was a potential Group horse in a handicap, and Gosden is not looking to hold back with the four-year-old, whose career has been limited to four starts due to injury.

Gosden pointed to the recent retirement of Diamond Jubilee Stakes winner Merchant Navy and the potential non-participation of Harry Angel, who cut his fetlock in the stalls at Royal Ascot, as reason to grasp the nettle with Dreamfield.

The trainer said on Sunday: "He's looking towards the July Cup. [Merchant Navy's] being retired to Australia and unfortunately others are banging themselves on the stalls, so we'll give it a go."

He added: "With these sprints you can run them five times and get five different results."

Dreamfield is a general 14-1 shot to give Gosden a second victory in the July Cup, a race he captured with Oasis Dream in 2003. Blue Point is the market leader for the Newmarket contest at 7-2.
