Lil bump in the road could be costly for unlucky Whelan
Trevor Whelan could be denied the chance to bid for Grade 1 glory at Punchestown thanks to an ill-timed accident on his bike.
The jockey is due to ride Lil Rockerfeller in the Ladbrokes Champion Stayers Hurdle on Thursday, when his mount has just three-quarters of a length to make up on Cheltenham conqueror Nichols Canyon.
But trainer Neil King revealed on Monday: "Trevor was out exercising on his bike yesterday, he took a fall and dislocated his shoulder. Nothing is ever straightforward!
"There's no bigger fan and supporter of Trevor than me and we'll give him every chance to be fit, but we have to be sensible.
"I do have a couple of ideas of who might ride him otherwise and I've spoken to a couple of people, but we'll just see how Trevor is in the morning. We have to declare tomorrow."
Lil Rockerfeller is a best-priced 10-1 chance for Thursday's race, in which Nichols Canyon is general 6-4 favourite.
Conditional jockey John Kington is facing a spell on the sidelines after a heavy fall at Sedgefield last week.
"I have a T8 fracture," he said on Monday. "I'm in a back brace and I need to go back to the hospital in three weeks to be reassessed.
"It's up in the air when I'll be able to come back to race-riding, but it could have been a lot worse."
